My life holds few distinctions, but I think it is safe to say the fact that my boys are confirmed goofballs is one of them.

I am just lucky that way!

Resolutions for 2013 – Sweet Spot Style

Standard

Yes, it is that time again – Resolution time.  Truthfully, I hold with the Non-Resolution style of ringing in the New Year.  That being said, there is always something of value to be learned from history – ones own adventures and, well, misadventures.

Thus this year, I decided to scour the Sweet Spot Archives of 2012 in search of some well earned Resolutions for 2013.
I think I found some pretty powerful nuggets of advice for the New Year…

1.  I will be sure to check my pants zipper (Life, the Ego-Sucking Siege) before entering any and all public establishments.

2. I will struggle on in my war against electronics (I Am Woman – Ode to Chris the Caveman) in the never ending battle for influence over my kids’ brain.

3.  I will try to have a kindler, gentler approach to my vacuum (The Day I Killed the Vacuum) and well, for that matter all machines in general (Woman vs. Machine).

4.  I will try to take Teens advice to drink water and recycle – preferably at the same time – (Teen Talk: Episode #3) and, of course, Pre-Teens advice to Never Sit on a Couch at a Nudest Colony.

5.  I swear never to utter the chant “Party at home plate” at my kids’ baseball games (Take Us To Warp Speed, Scotty), or do any of those other things that would qualify me for “bulldog” status as a  Sports Mom (Bulldogs Don’t Wear Lipstick).

6.  I promise, for Teen and Pre-Teen’s sake, to work in the words “Balls”  (Word-Up: We’ve Got Big Balls) and “Weenus” (Word-Up: Show Me Your Weenus) into every conversation where possible but not necessarily appropriate.

7.  In true Mid-West fashion, I promise to generously give the “no problem” wave, the “thanks for not honking at me even though I deserve it” wave, and possibly throw in the “I’m cool” head wave.  (You Deserve the Wave Today).

8.  I will seek out adventure every chance I get (Sweet Spot Travels), even the scary kind (Today’s Best Moment Thursday April 5.)

9.  I will try to make someones day as often as possible  simply by donning a pen and piece of rainbow stationary. (Go Ahead, Make My Day).

10.  I will be sure to have plenty of stockings/pantyhose and pet hair removal devices on hand for whatever occasion may arise. (Bag Lady Goes a Job Hunting).

11.  I will try to never, ever forget how good it feels to laugh (Destroy This Note After Reading).

And lastly, two lessons –  clearly resolution worthy – from some recent experiences:

I will try to not take as a personal commentary the worker-monogrammed cups received at Starbucks:

Starbucks cup

And, I will remember to pee prior to attending a D-Box movie.

Happy New Year from Looking for the Sweet Spot.

Go get ’em!

Cat Meets Fish

Standard

My son recently got a fish for a pet – three guppy fish to be exact.  We decided it was no use actually naming them until we saw how our cat, Lulubelle, was going to embrace their existence and residence in our her house. Thus, a formal introduction was arranged.

Lulubelle paced around and around the bowl.

Sniffed the contents.

Looked wide eyed at the moving objects inside.

Batted at the glass.

Tested the water with a paw.

It was touch and go there for a while.

Would the poor defenseless fish actually survive our heartless, survival-of-the fittest cat?

And then it happened.

Lulubelle stuck her head into the bowl and…

… drank the water.

cat meets fish

I am thinking, in the end, she decided it was too much work for such a small prize.

Oh and probably, she was thirsty.

Besides, Take Out Delivery is just so much more convenient.

The Magical Movie Tour

Bath, UK: Jane Austin – Pulteney Bridge

Oxford, UK: Harry Potter

Salisbury, UK: Some Superhero movie somewhere

Stonehenge, UK: Spinal Tap (20 inches or 20 feet…???)

London, UK:  Sherlock Holmes

Sweet Spot: Marlette Lake – Lake Tahoe, California

Standard

Truly breathtaking spot.  Want to go there?  Well, no cars are allowed, not even any roads, just trails. So here is what you need to do:

1.  Rent or bring a bike with lots and lots of suspension (unless you want your ya-ya parts to be screaming in agony the next day).

2.  Get up at the crack of dawn…(ok, or a few hours past the crack if you are like me and choose not to function any earlier than that!).

3.  Wear sunscreen (sun, high altitude and all).

4.  Wear bug spray ( I swear the mosquitos are as big as bald eagles up there!).

5.  Bike about 4 miles up hill (yes, really all uphill), to arrive at Marlette Lake.

6.  Leave your vertigo at home because the most exhilarating way down the mountain is to bike the 9 mile Flume Trail – an ant-trail sized path, apx 7800 elevation, along the side of Sierra Mountains with breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe (uhh, don’t miss the trail, it s a long way down the hard way!).

7. And, when you finally make those arduous 3 to 4 miles up hill (for a special treat, the steepest part is saved for the last mile)  and before the long scenic cruise down hill (hopefully on the path and not down the side of the mountain)…don’t forget to take a swim.

For this sweet spot, the entire journey is more than worth it!

Oh, and on the chance you happen across the rope swing at Marlette Lake, better view this:  Boy Meets Tree

Today is a Good Day

Standard

Today is a good day.

Today I get to board a plane to begin our annual end-of-summer-baseball-is-finally-finished-travel-blowout-bonanza!

There is nothing more exciting than boarding a plane  at the start of a travel adventure.

I apologize in advance for my possible lack of attention to Sweet Spot over the next  weeks while  searching for Sweet Spots around and abroad!

As a family we have come a long way since our first days of travel, but one thing I know for sure – some will be good, some will be bad, some will by hysterical, some will be amazing, and above all…

When all fails…cry.

Today’s Best Moment: Friday 7/20

Being a baseball parent can be rough, let me tell you.

The endless season, the stress and worry, the out-of-hand sports parents, the small town tournaments, the bad hotels, the can-never-please parents attacking coach husband, the countless hours washing and washing and washing uniforms, the  multitude of practices, the driving, the hot sun, the heartbreaking losses, and the list goes on.

But every once in a while something happens.

A bright spot.

And I am not talking about wins or successes (although clearly, those are good, too).

No, this is an event infinitely more powerful.

When  least expected, I get to see my husband do something like  this:

And suddenly, in that moment, I know it is all worth it.

Today, actually a few minutes ago, I asked my son to climb one of his favorite trees so I could take a picture for an upcoming blog post.  He quickly scaled his tree like no monkey ever could.  I was suddenly reminded of a moment when he was around 6 years old. My Mom, Grandma,  was visiting.  Grandma went outside to see what he was doing and found him as high up in his tree as was possible to get.

Grandma called up to him:

“You are so high, could you come down, I am afraid for you”

To which my son, without missing a beat, replied:

“Grandma, you will just have to conquer your fears.”

My Mom and I still laugh about it.

I hope his tree lives forever.

I am having trouble keeping up with work and writing this summer. Could it be that I am doing too much of this…? One can only ponder.

Today’s Best Moment: Tuesday, 6/12

Standard

Today’s Best Moment is a different one – for me here at Sweet Spot anyway.  Today’s moment is about being thankful.  Thankful  I only had to read about the information in my recent article on ParentSociety.com and not live it first hand.  Thankful my kids are healthy, happy and strong.  Thankful I can talk to my kids about the difficult choices and dangers they will face out  in the world.

I know I usually write what I like to think are informative, yet humor-infused articles. However, I wanted to deviate from my normal light-hearted approach to write something regarding a new designer drug called bath salts. Why? Because up until a few days ago, I had never even heard of this horrific new synthetic drug and as a parent, that scared the puffin’ stuff out of me…

I reasoned that maybe I was not the only parent ignorant until recently of this scary new creation.  If you want to know more go here to read.

Happy Friday!

May your weekend be filled with fun, laughs and sunshine.  And, may you endeavor to answer the age old question:

“How much sand really can fit in a T-shirt?”

Today’s Best Moment: Thursday, 4/26

What?  Hold on, hold on –  folding a mountain of laundry was NOT  Today’s Best Moment because that would be well, sad and completely crazy.

No, the best moment was when I walked into the still-being-renovated-for-10-years laundry room, saw this toppling heap of laundry and literally laughed out loud.  You know the kind of laughter when your nearby sleeping cat, upon hearing your outburst,  looks up at you like you are a complete and utter moron?  Yep, one of those.

Sometimes, those moments are what get me through the day.  And, I think my cat  lives for them, too.

Las Vegas at night.

I won a few dollars (no really, I mean actually $2.00).  Then,  I lost the $2.00.   So, I went to watch the Bellagio Fountains – which are free,  and still by far my favorite thing on the Vegas Strip. Yes, even better than the Jack Sparrow impersonator.  It was a good night.

Devil’s Bridge – Sedona, Arizona

We had to hike to get there.  I didn’t even panic when they walked across.  Ok, that is a lie.  I did panic, a little. But man, it was cool.

The truth is, the best moment may very well have been afterwards,   playing football with them in the hotel pool. That was cool, too.

I took my kids to see The Hunger Games.

But oh, we didn’t just see the movie.  We discussed casting, disagreed on plot changes, analyzed adjusted content, evaluated screenplay adaptation, laughed at The Hunger Pains parody,  fought over  necessity of added scenes, pondered future installments, reviewed overall success, and considered Lenny’s gold eyeliner.

The movie was good.  The after part was the best.

**Cheese Alert**

My 10 year old son had said his goodbyes and headed out the door to go to a friends house.

Five minutes later he comes running into the room where I am working, with the most beautiful bunch of fresh picked flowers, in a vase with water.  A hug and an “I love you, Mom” later, back out the door he goes to the friends house.  Leaving me choked up, happy, feeling loved and hoping the neighbors don’t mind…

What is life without a little cheese.

Today I signed the contract to be a Contributing Writer for ParentSociety.com!  I am excited and terrified all at the same time.  But mostly, I am thankful this new adventure I began at the ripe young age of 40 (cough, cough) something has opened yet another window. And I have to say,  the air smells sweet today.

Today’s Best Moment: Wednesday 2/29

Standard

Today’s best moment came when I walked into the room to find my 12 year old son listening to the Rolling Stones while doing his homework, all of his own accord.

It was at that moment I knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt,  as a parent I was doing something right. For clearly, he knows good Rock & Roll when he hears it. I felt so proud.

Todays Best Moment: Monday 1/30

Standard

There I was, wrestling with “The Beast” (aka: Full Kitchen Trash Bag), out-manned, out-matched and out-maneuvered as contents began to spill out onto the floor.  “Help Needed!”, I yelled to no one in particular.  Both of my boys came bounding into the kitchen to my aide.  Together, we tamed “The Beast”.  They’ve got my back.  I’m not alone.  It feels good.

Today’s Best Moment – Monday 1/16

Standard

Watching my boys learn how to make Macaroni and Cheese.

Seriously, it was poetry in motion. I laughed, I cried, I cleaned up burnt pasta water all over the stove. Actually,  the best part of the moment may have been seeing them growing up?… Learning to do for themselves? …No, it was when I realized  I won’t have to do it anymore.  Laundry, anyone?
